Poetry beyond the horizon—Kile Smith, composer of the VAE's stunning Canticle, returns with a relevatory masterpiece The Arc in the Sky, inspired by words of Robert Lax, gets its Cincinnati premiere by Craig Hella Johnson and the VAE. Lax, a close friend of Trappist monk Thomas Merton, was named “one of the great original voices of our times” by American icon Jack Kerouac. That voice rises and converges on meaning and emotion in Smith’s powerful new work.

Sacred sounds, then and now. After one of Bach’s most beloved cantatas, the VAE turns toward profound works by four young and celebrated living composers. Enjoy music familiar in its freshness by Roomful of Teeth star Caroline Shaw, divine works by two European voices, and a world premiere by one of Cincinnati’s own, Michael Ippolito.
